The Witness of a Legend -The Final Nod
The year is 2011. I am standing at the bar of the Lenox Lounge, a 1939 Art Deco beacon that has anchored 125th Street for 72 years. It is a unique crossroads of history: surrounded by streamlined "retro" elegance, we are nodding our heads to Styles P and The Notorious B.I.G. In this moment, the grace of the Harlem Renaissance meets the grit of the 90s NYC diaspora. It is a frequency you can only find here.
The Erasure
By late 2012, the doors are locked. Soon after, the building is demolished—replaced with no landmark. In its place stands a generic space with no significance, a storefront that carries none of the soul that once defined the block. While a 72-year legacy was turned to dust, the atmosphere remains a permanent record in my subconscious archive. As a native New Yorker born in 1982, I am a witness and I am the storyteller charged with keeping this rhythm alive.
Building New Walls
Step Into Elegance is a hand-drawn distillation of that memory, created using my eyes, mind, heart, and fingers. By drawing directly into the digital world from a raw sketch without a stylus, I capture the raw "human trace" of the bass hitting in that front room. The walls you see in this piece are the ones I drew to replace the void—new walls designed to house the elegance that the city tried to erase.
The Forever Art
The doors on 125th Street are gone, but through this work, you still get to step back into that world. I designed the Lenox Lounge footstool to be the physical bridge. All you have to do is close your eyes and imagine stepping on the stool; it takes you back to that bar, that beat, and that era. The old walls were torn down and replaced with nothing, but these new walls and the artistry remain forever.
